I became a caregiver for Our Family Friend in July 2018. Before that I was a bus driver for physically and mentally handicapped children and young adults. I have a heart to help people. It is an honor and joy to help the elderly. I aim to brighten their day and put a smile on their face. They truly deserve to be treated with love, respect, and dignity in their precious golden years.
I am a wife, a mother of twin daughters, and a grandmother of eight wonderful grandchildren. I love to go to church, spend time with my family, travel, and be near the water. My desire is to bring out the gold in people. I am truly a blessed woman.
In 2016, I began my experience as a private duty caregiver with Our Family Friend. It has been such a fulfilling position for me that I went back to college in hopes of becoming a registered nurse. I am proud to say that, as of 2019, I am halfway through the nursing program at Washtenaw Community College. It is tremendously rewarding to be able to give compassionate care in a client’s home and enable them to be as independent as possible.
When I am not busy with school or work, I am usually involved with local theater organizations—both on the stage (acting) and off the stage (artistic directing).
"I am a single mother of four children and a grandmother of six. All my life I’ve taken care of everyone...grandmother, siblings, children, nieces, nephews, and even the neighborhood children! I believe taking care of others is my calling. I enjoy life to the fullest. I am going to Jackson College to get my Associate Degree in art. Then I want to return to Lansing Community College to get my Associate Degree in Early Childhood Development."
Marilyn is a caring, compassionate, and loving caregiver who always goes above and beyond. Her hobbies include doing mission trips and helping others as much as she can. She loves her kids and grandkids and of course her Our Family Friend clients.
Our Family Friend would like to spotlight one of our exceptional caregivers—Michelle Sanford. Michelle has been with Our Family Friend for one year. She is greatly appreciated and highly valued for her hard work, her kindness, and her commitment to her clients.
Michelle works full time caring for a lovely couple at Countryside Retirement Community in Jackson, MI. Michelle says, “I love spending time with them and I care about them so much.” She helps them with whatever they need—running errands, providing transportation, giving emotional support, going on walks, household help, etc.
Michelle says her clients are funny, very kind, and easy to be around. They don’t have a lot of family in the area, so she wants to support them any way she can.
Michelle lives in Michigan Center and has four sons, ages 7, 10, 20, and 21. “When I’m not working, my life is all about my kids,” says Michelle. “But I love my work, I love the company. They are all great people and they understand the importance of family. They have supported me in every way.”
We can’t overemphasize our thankfulness for our caregivers like Michelle. They are the hands and feet of our company!
My name is Mara. With degrees from the University of Alabama and Michigan, I have spent almost three decades working in the health and wellness field in various capacities. My emphasis in the last 10 years has been on the senior community. It is my mission to provide excellent care and build strong and trusting relationships with the seniors I work with. I have experience working with folks requiring extra assistance physically and cognitively. It is my privilege to enhance the life of an individual navigating this challenging, yet beautiful season of life.
I have been blessed with a strong marriage for the last 31 years. Our three adult kids have moved out, but our two dads still share our home with us. In my spare time I love to hike with my dog Grace. A daily reminder that all is grace.
